An initiative of the Vale Foundation and the Marabá Knowledge Station, the Community Preparatory Course for the municipality of Pará began in July this year, considering all precautions against the coronavirus. In all, 149 young people participate in classes focused on college entrance exams for state, federal colleges and ENEM, and the course is exclusively for students from the public school system, with 20 places specifically designed for the indigenous population. The project takes place in partnership with the Center for Integrated Studies and Programs for Sustainable Development (CIEDS) and investment from POSCO and Vale.

Applied teaching is inspired by the course offered at Maré, Rio de Janeiro

With the teaching methodology inspired by the set of favelas of Maré, in Rio, the project supports low-income students and encourages young people from different social realities to search for a more promising future. Of those registered so far, 108 are women, 124 self-declared black and brown, and the remaining numbers reflect other social groups and minorities. The project seeks to prepare the participants to enter in an university, expanding the possibilities in the education of residents of Marabá and surrounding regions.

Endrio Freire Lima, biology teacher at the Community Pre-Entrance Exam, tells the importance of social projects in the insertion of young people into college and the main difficulties faced by those who cannot afford a preparatory course. “It’s great to know that there are projects that give students the opportunity to acquire knowledge, because in my time I didn’t have it. I always tell students that having a person responsible for passing on content is an indescribable opportunity. I hope all students are able to take advantage of the opportunity”
